Feb 11: Beneficial Fire & Enhancing Wildfire Resilience

The POLIS Wildfire Resilience Project’s Kevin Kriese will be presenting on how beneficial fire can be used to strengthen wildfire resilience in communities and landscapes. Drawing from POLIS’ recent report Beneficial Fire in B.C.: An Exploration of How Fire Can Contribute to Wildfire Resilience, Kevin will introduce the concept of beneficial fire and explore how it can enhance wildfire resilience across different regions.

The presentation will share a conceptual model of beneficial fire and outline practical steps that planners and resource managers can take to better understand the ecological and community dimensions of wildfire — and to determine which types of fire are beneficial in their area. The session will conclude with a exploration of opportunities to promote more beneficial fire as part of a whole-of-society approach to wildfire resilience.
