Wildfire Resilience and a Cross-Government Approach in British Columbia

Wildfire has emerged as a high priority for governments across Canada and globally. This paper recommends a transformative shift within the provincial government to address the growing wildfire crisis in B.C. Its central recommendation is to shift to a cross-government approach to wildfire resilience, achieved through a formal mechanism for improved coordination and collaboration between provincial ministries. This will allow the provincial government to better address the serious ecological and social impacts of the wildfire crisis and will deliver wide-ranging co-benefits.

This paper is part of POLIS’ Ember Insights series, which explores timely and innovative aspects of wildfire resilience with a focus on technical and governance reform opportunities.
